The Airbus A340 project began in mid1986 as a joint project with the A330. The A340 entered service in March of 1993 with Air France and Lufthansa. Like Airbus’s A320, the A340 uses the same all-new wing, fly-by-wire system, and advanced materials technology. The A340 was designed as a medium-density long-range transport aircraft. The A340-300 is capable of carrying more than 300 passengers a distance of over 7,000 miles.
