Today’s navigation is achieved through the flight management system (FMS). This device announced a revolution when it was first introduced by Honeywell on Loockeed 1011-500 Tristar in the late 70’s. FMS is a navigation computer but also a system that can manage all aircraft performances. This is the heart of nowadays « electronic » aircrafts. As a computer it came with lots of strange bugs built in... EMBRAER took a way back to basics while designing ERJ145, so FMS is an option. That’s why performance aspect of the FMS is not as important as it could be for an A320 for example. ERJ’s FMS is therefore closer to a GNS (global navigation system) rather than a real FMS. Let’s know how to use it.
